The Future of New York Symposium
Maximum New York is partnering with Fractal to bring you The Future of New York Symposium, a series of 14 Sunday evening gatherings.
Each Sunday, from September 8 through December 15, we will curate five lightning talks from the people actively building some aspect of New York City’s future. We’ll have presentations from those in technology, government, the arts, culture, and more.
After the short round of talks, we’ll adjourn to a general party (moderately cozy) where attendees and presenters can get to know each other more, enjoy music and food, and densify the social network of those who are actively working to make New York City better.
Want to give a talk?
🔗 You can apply here. If the talk fits into the schedule, we’ll contact you about fleshing it out!
Here’s what we’re looking for:
You have done something, and you want to tell us about it. 💪📢
You can help others see how they might do something in turn. 👀👀
You believe in the great future of New York City and America 🗽🇺🇸
You have razzle-dazzle ✨💃
These talks should focus on what you want to see more of, not fighting things you don’t like. 🚀😃
Five minutes or less! This will be strictly enforced.
All talks will be made in Google Slides, and you’ll get a basic template to use and riff on. If you want to use something else, just ask.
Examples of some talk prompts that you might address (but don’t limit yourself):
How do you run for office and win?
How do you produce new, fresh art that invigorates the city’s culture?
Raising children in New York City
Can you run a factory here?
Is New York City the new capital of technology? Investigate.
Talk and attendee etiquette:
No bullshitting, aka be concrete. We’re all here to learn fascinating things, but we’re doing it in a rigorous fashion. You must always strive to deeply understand the reality of our world and city, which often runs against fashionable opinion!
Extend grace to everyone. The future of New York requires bold ideas and risk taking. Extend a correspondingly accommodating social space.
Find the good time. Taking things seriously does not mean being mad or upset about them. We’re all working on the large, collective project of New York City—no reason to have a bad time!
Excelsior!
The future of New York City is bright. Come and see it for yourself. The first evening’s invitation is already live, and will be updated with talk details as soon as we have them.
