Helen Keller Loved the Empire State Building

Most people’s knowledge of Helen Keller stops after learning of her disabilities. But she and her great teacher, Annie Sullivan, are jewels in the American story.
But I’ll keep this post short. It contains Helen Keller’s impressions of the Empire State Building, from its observation deck, shortly after completion. They were published in The New York Times in 1932.

Instead of crouching close to earth like a beast, the spirit of man soars to higher regions, and from this new point of vantage he looks upon the impossible with fortified courage and dreams yet more magnificent enterprises.”
