Preserved Fish is actually buried in the NYC Marble Cemetery, which is located on E 2nd St, which I pass by on my morning walks! There is a plaque near the entrance gate mentioning Preserved Fish as a prominent merchant.
I also found the name fascinating and looked him up, apparently he comes from the same Fish family as Hamilton Fish - who was governor of NY and who also has an East Village park named after him. The Fish have their fingerprints all over the city.
According to Wikipedia, "Preserved" is a reference to "being preserved from sin". I was hoping his parents gave him the name out of a magnificent sense of humor, but that makes more sense. Interesting powerful Dutch family from the city's 19th century!
Fascinating! Some highlights:
"An eccentric Connecticut whaling captain named Preserved Fish"… one wonders the backstory of this name?
"a Cow on Board to supply them with Milk" – how clever!

Post pics!
The gates are often locked so I haven’t been inside to see Preserved’s grave, but here’s what I got!
Salute the good captain, Preserved Fish.
